Here are 3 sounds of spring and one other sign that it is on its way, all found on my morning walk:
Northern Flicker calling and drumming
Northern Flicker calling and drumming

Pine Grosbeak singing
Black-Capped Chickadee singing

Sunshine by 7:30 am.
Happy Spring!

I used to live in Little River, (well, Comox really, but I love to say Little River as it sounds sooo wonderful and is close to a Ferry landing!) and the Northern Flickers would come and drum on the metal part of the chimney above my bedroom. It was a wonderful sound, and a great sound to wake up to. Plus, they often left their calling card, an orange feather, and who can resist that?

You may be one of the few people in he world to like the drumming of woodpeckers! I'm with you on that one. That sound means spring and spring is a joyous time. And I agree, Little River sounds lovely. We used to live on North Star Drive. I love living in places with interesting names.
ReplyDeleteI do love the drumming of woodpeckers! And Woody Woodpecker, Mr. Pileated (did I spell correctly?) used to hang out and about in the log piles on the beaches. Seems to me I used to see them mostly in the winter.. but that could have just been because of the lack of tourists. So I'd be walking along the beach and suddenly hear all this noise and see wood chips just a flying, and I could sneak up on them, especially if the waves and wind were up, and see them, sometimes in a gang of of three, all hammering away for insects hiding in the logs....what a treat! Both me seeing them and them eating nice fresh and juicy insects!
DeleteIt's always great to see them actually get something. I think birds have to work pretty hard to feed themselves. Nice to see some success!
